Understanding Florida's Food Safety Training Requirements
Maintaining food safety compliance is essential for food service establishments in Florida. To help you stay on top of the latest requirements, we’ve outlined the key training mandates based on Chapter 64E-11.012(5), Florida Administrative Code (FAC). This guide ensures your team is well-prepared to meet regulatory standards and create a safe environment for your patrons.
Annual Employee Training Requirements
The Florida Department of Health mandates annual training for all employees involved in food storage, preparation, service, or equipment cleaning. Here’s what you need to know:
- Who Needs Training: All employees under the supervision of a certified manager or person in charge.
- Timing:
- Must be completed by March 31 each year.
- New hires must complete training within 30 days of hire if onboarded after the annual training session.
- Documentation:
- Managers must keep a roster of attendees and the training curriculum on file for three years.
- A copy of the most recent food service inspection report must be readily available for patrons upon request.
Non-Compliance:
Establishments failing to meet training or documentation requirements must schedule training and testing with the health department or an approved third-party course provider. This must occur within 60 days of violation or before the renewal of the sanitation certificate.
Food Manager Certification
- Requirement:
- Certification valid for 5 years.
- Required for food and beverage managers within 30 days of hire.
We offer in-person classes throughout Florida and on-site training for teams of 8 or more.
Food Handler Certification
- Requirement:
- All front-of-house (FOH) and back-of-house (BOH) staff handling food must obtain certification within 60 days of hire.
- Certificates remain valid for 3 years.
